If you’re introducing your new family member to the outdoors, here are some camping tips to make your first trip safe and memorable.

A tiny newcomer is a huge change for all families, but it might seem especially challenging for the really outdoorsy ones. Spending time and sleeping in nature starts looking like a thing of the past, and camping plans are postponed for when he or she gets “big enough”. However, with a little bit more planning you can easily adapt your existing camping rituals and bring your baby on their first camping trip!

Plan your location carefully

Think not only about what the location is like (choosing grassy areas instead of rocky ones is always a good idea when you have an active toddler) but also about how you’re getting there.

Try to pick locations that are closer to home, or go when the roads aren’t busy — that way you can avoid long drives and cry-filled traffic jams.

Check your camping site beforehand

Make sure your camping site has all the amenities needed before you get there. You might be able to go without the comforts of everyday life when you’re camping alone, but camping with babies requires running water, and you might feel better knowing that there is good phone reception and some kind of infirmary near just in case of emergency. Choose developed campsites over primitive ones!

Camping food for babies

If you’re going with an infant that’s still breastfed, you already have your eating options all sorted out. However, if your baby uses a bottle, make sure you have clean water for mixing formula.

Don’t try introducing new foods in their diet during camping, but if the baby is already eating regular food, try planning meals that you can all share or bring already prepared pureed food.

Pay attention to the heat

Babies can’t adjust to temperature changes the way adult bodies can, which means they can overheat far quicker. Colder weather is just one of the advantages of off-season camping, so consider opting for off-season travel if going with your baby.

However, if you do end up camping with your baby in hot weather, make sure to keep them in the shade since most sunscreens aren’t suitable for kids younger than 6 months. Regularly touch their skin to check their temperature, and maybe bring some wet face cloths and use them to keep the baby cool in hot weather at night.

Baby camping gear

As for bringing extra baby camping gear, maybe consider buying the following items: a pair of sturdy infant camping pants for your baby to crawl around in, a baby bug suit to protect them from restless mosquitoes, a rain suit and a hammock they can nap in when the tent gets too hot.

Light, portable high chairs are also a good idea and can make mealtime easier. Besides extras, plan and bring enough of the necessary items such as baby wipes, diapers and a bag to keep them in (preferably one that also keeps in the odours!).

Camping with toddlers might seem challenging, but it’s also rewarding to see your kids fall in love with nature and camping.
